Grades 3-12

English & Writing

Classic reading, critical reading, grammar, analytical writing, and creative writing for grades 3 through 12.

Oakton Academy’s English program is built around a simple belief: students become stronger writers when they read deeply, discuss thoughtfully, and revise with meaningful feedback.

The legacy English pages included reading and writing options for elementary, middle-school, and high-school students. The new site presents those offerings as a clearer pathway from classic reading and writing to critical reading, advanced writing, and SAT/AP readiness.

Program pathway

  • Grades 3–4: reading confidence, vocabulary, sentence fluency, and early paragraph writing
  • Grades 4–6: classic literature, discussion, grammar, creative writing, and structured response writing
  • Grades 6–8: advanced reading, analytical paragraphs, literary interpretation, and essay organization
  • Grades 9–10: critical reading, advanced pre-AP English, grammar, and argument-based writing
  • Grades 11–12: SAT/ACT reading and writing support, AP English preparation, and college-essay readiness when appropriate

Literature and materials

Past Oakton classes have used classic novels, poetry, drama, biographies, speeches, and selected nonfiction from science, history, and current affairs. Examples from the legacy curriculum include works such as Great Expectations, Tom Sawyer, To Kill a Mockingbird, Shakespeare selections, poetry, and age-appropriate nonfiction.

What makes the class effective

Students do not just read books — they learn how to notice author choices, build interpretations, support claims with evidence, and express ideas clearly. Writing instruction includes planning, drafting, editing, proofreading, and revision so students learn a process they can apply in school and beyond.
